Brief introduction

My name is Eric van Straaten. Full color 3D printing is my trade. I am in need of my own full color 3D printer to gain a higher degree of esthetical quality, as every artist in search of perfection.

Even though having a lot of opportunities to show my work, due to the very high production costs, I am still struggling as an artist. Each sculpture leaving my studio, has to be funded by myself. Because the printer is not always consistent in quality, it may happen that a sculpture has to be printed several times. Also during the finishing of a sculpture a lot may go wrong. Pieces may break, the surface may be damaged, etc. You can imagine the production cost sometimes surmounts the sales price. If you could help me to get my own printer, I will be able to reduce those costs because no third party is involved.

This is why I am looking for sponsors to help me to get a full color 3D printer of my own. As a thank you for sponsors, I have created a range of limited editioned 3D printed figurines that can only be found in this campaign. For further information about the printer I need and why that costs $60.000, scroll down below the description of the perks.

WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR SPONSORSHIP?

See below examples of the figurines I designed for this campaign. In the gallery at the top of this page more images of details and also some larger sculptures are to be found.

NOTE: To order, click on a ‘perk’ at the right upper corner of this page or below the description underneath. Then, check in as a guest or create an Indiegogo account. Payment is only possible by credit card or with PayPal. If you are not able to do either, I can help you. Go here: CROWDFUNDING VOOR NEDERLANDSE SPONSORS

Keep in mind that full color 3D printing at this level takes a lot longer than you would expect. Especially the post processing is time consuming as you can see in the video at the top of this page. Time will also be needed to get my own machine up and running. Even if I do not reach my goal, you will still receive the perk you ordered!

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ME AND THE CAMPAIGN

Biography

Born in 1969 I grew up and am still living and working in Haarlem, The Netherlands. I used to sculpt my detailed statues by hand. Six years ago I began to master the art of 3D modelling. Within a year I was able to produce my first 3D printed sculpture. Soon my work was picked up by several known galleries and collectors. At this very moment my sculptures are in high demand with galleries in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, USA and Japan. To my great honor, my sculpture ‘Pelican’ is featured on the ‘Lucas Museum of Narrative Art’s’ website as a representative example of work that will be exhibited as a part of the collection. Check it out here: http://www.lucasmuseum.org/collection/category/digital-sculpture-01.html

The largest 3D printed sculpture I ever made, assembled in 15 parts

About the full color 3D printer

The only 3D printer that in my opinion is able to produce beautiful 3D prints in full color, is the ProJet by 3D Systems (formerly known as ZCorp). The printer large enough for my sculptures, is the ProJet 650. This machine is not a DIY desktop printer, but an industrial machine that does not come cheap. Even a second hand one, suitable for my sculptures, would cost around $40.000. Furthermore the print materials are very expensive. Color and binder cartridges are about $1.000 and the machine has to be fed with print medium (a kind of plaster) at a cost of $6.000. Cartridges and print medium have to be resupplied regularly as you start printing.

Why the ProJet 650?

I believe there is no other technique that can achieve the level of hypersurrealism made possible in 3D computer modelling. Industrial 3D printing is the only technique that can be used to make full color digital models tangible, close to the original design. I aim for physical expressiveness in my sculptures, while preserving a certain digital feel. It has been said my sculptures contain a weirdly eroticized corporeality, although the models are completely virtual. Like Barbie, they will never be real human, nor will they be based on a real human. They are a complete figment of my imagination. Balancing on the edge of kitsch, the marzipan-like quality of the ProJet material resonates beautifully with the apparent innocence of the scenery.

Why do I need your help?

Even though having a lot of opportunities to show my work, due to the very high production costs, I am still struggling as an artist. Each sculpture leaving my studio, has to be funded by myself. Because the ProJet is not always consistent in quality, it may happen that a sculpture has to be printed several times. Also during the finishing of a sculpture a lot may go wrong. Pieces may break, the surface may be damaged, etc. You can imagine the production cost sometimes surmounts the sales price. If you could help me to get my own printer, I will be able to reduce those costs because no third party is involved.

After printing and cleaning, the 3D printed parts need to sit in a bath to make them water resistant and brighten the colors

Join the experience

To my knowledge, I am the only artist in the world working at this level of full color 3D printing. Your donorship would therefore be part of an unique experience! To make that experience a real one: I have created a Helpdesk on my website, a (secret) place where you can ask 3D printing related questions. Having experimented and worked for 6 years, I have acquired a lot of knowhow, especially in making digital models ‘print ready’.

Risks and Challenges

To reach my goal, including the production costs for the perks of this crowdfunding campaign, I have estimated that I need around $60.000. This is a serious lot of money, but I am confident that I can bring this money to good use and it will provide me with the opportunity to further develop my work. As sponsor, you carry no risk at all: even if the campaign does not reach its target, you will receive the perks you have chosen. Any amount will help me, so do not hesitate to contribute! Thank you in advance, Eric van Straaten.
