New Pembrokeshire art workshops go down a storm with aspiring landscape artists

Since the summer, contemporary landscape painter Sarah Jane Brown has welcomed aspiring artists into her Pembrokeshire studio to enjoy an exciting new range of art workshops. Her classes have been enthusiastically received, despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented.

Known for her breathtaking paintings of the Welsh coastal landscape, Sarah Jane is a passionate and generous teacher. She shares her knowledge and enthusiasm in a clear and supportive way, teaching essential skills, techniques and developmental thinking to encourage students to take their painting forward into a lifelong passion of their own.

Those who have attended Sarah Jane’s workshops are full of praise for her teaching style and delighted with their newly acquired knowledge. Student Alistair Halliday says, “Fabulous day. I learned so much – Sarah was full of brilliant tips and advice. I cannot believe how much I have learned in one day. Sarah is a natural tutor, warm, engaging, immensely knowledgeable, and with a lovely manner that puts you at ease. Brilliant!” Gill Jebson, who recently completed a 4-day workshop, adds, “Sarah is a patient and sympathetic teacher. She explains and demonstrates things fully and comprehensibly. This was such an enjoyable few days and I have left with so much knowledge and enthusiasm.”

Her programme of workshops is varied and designed to suit adults with a range of abilities. Each provides straightforward instruction with demos, practical exercises and learning through experimentation using a variety of media. Sarah Jane sees painting as “intensely personal and very public all at once” and understands all too well “that learning new things can be everything from a bit challenging to totally terrifying”, so promises to be gentle, explain everything clearly and provide fun achieveable exercises no matter the starting experience.

Beginners can try their hand at Painting Essentials, a basics day course that will give you the confidence to start your creative journey. Those who have picked up a paintbrush before can choose from a series of themed Sea, Land and Sky workshops, a Colour Confidence workshop to simplify your use of colour and transform your paintings, and a Get to Grips with Oils workshop that delivers the skills to master this challenging medium.

For those with more experience, Sarah Jane offers an advanced 4-day masterclass called Painting Booster which includes one-to-one mentorship sessions, designed to nudge you out of your comfort zone and take your painting up a few notches. If you prefer your learning bite-sized, then try Sarah Jane’s Tuesday evening painting classes. These social two-hour sessions are becoming popular with Pembrokeshire locals wanting to gain new skills and build confidence with their painting.

Her 2021 programme is partway through, but there’s still an opportunity to book classes before the end of the year. Sarah Jane prefers to keep group sizes small, so spaces are limited and can book up quickly. Visit her website for details: sjbfineart.com/classes-workshops/. Sarah Jane Brown has exhibited widely across the UK including at London’s Mall Galleries with the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), the Royal Cambrian Academy in North Wales, and several international exhibitions. Sarah Jane is a qualified member of the Guild Society of Artists, part of the Fine Art Trade Guild. Current work can be seen at Etcetera Gallery in St Davids in Pembrokeshire and Oriel Coffi in Llanidloes in Powys. Sarah Jane now runs a series of regular classes and workshops for adults in her Pembrokeshire art studio, with options for all abilities.
